Letter From An Adventurer In Search Of Gold. Stampless folded letter, 3½pp, quarto from Charles Currin, Panama, April 25 1854, to his sister in Amesbury, Mass. On March 10, 1853, he left California for Australia in search of gold but found none. "A party of eight…sank three holes each …170 feet deep and…took out about four ounces of gold…." Gold was discovered on the Amazon and Charles and other Americans went to Peru but "We found it to be a perfect humbug," so he was on his way to California to invest what money he had left in a farm. "Within the last five years I have visited 7 different kingdoms and republics and I think that is enough for me…our own people and our own government is far superior to any other in the world. Australia and her government I despise as I do a snake…They have already found out what Yankees can do and for this they insult us when we are in the minority…." A few small tape repairs; seal tear affects a few words.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
