Ernst, Max (1891-1976) German painter and sculpter; co-founder of the Dada movement and a promoter of the Surrealist movement. Original 8 x 9¾ inch Photograph Signed and Inscribed, "à Cornelius Greenway, cordialement / Max Ernst," n.p., c. 1947, 8 x 9¾ inches. The head-and-shoulders portrait shows Ernst in front of his painting, "The Temptation of St. Anthony," which was used in the 1947 movie "The Private Affairs of Bel Ami," and for which Ernst won a $3,000 prize. This photo was used to announce the award. Some corner creasing. Signed in blue ink at lower edge and on Ernst's collar. Also included is the press release announcing the prize and two other photos of the painting.
