Borglum, Gutzon (1867-1941) Creator of Mt. Rushmore sculptures. Typed Letter Signed on personal letterhead, San Antonio, Texas, April 15, 1931, 2pp, 10¼ x 7¼ in. To Assistant Postmaster Gerneral General W. Irving Glover. An amazing letter with specific content on how to build a safe airplane, responding to a speech Glover gave before the Mechanical Engineers in Detroit. Borglum deplores "the colossal blundering covering twenty years, wasting millions, due to foolish reproductions of what the Wright Brothers and their successors gave us," and reminds Glover that he "investigated the Aircraft Department for Mr. Wilson…to expedite production…" By "safe plane" Borglum means "a plane that will ride the storms and meet the distress of sudden inclement conditions independent of a dead motor, and come to earth with a fair percentage of safely to life. I have known for fifteen years that that is not only feasible, but easily affected….there is no need of departing from the present and general plane design, but apply radical reconstruction of air foil and fuselage to the present machine…." Borglum is looking for financing to put his stabilizing ideas to a six-month test. Paperclip mark at top; light toning. Excellent content!
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.
