Trotsky, Leon (1879-1940) Russian communist leader. Autograph Document Signed, headed "Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, 7th Army, Headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division," February 11, 1919, 1 p, 4½ x 7 in. In Cyrillic script, addressed "To the commandant of the train, Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic," ordering him to issue to the bearer, Division Commandant comrade Polyakov, 200 rifles of the dragoon pattern, 50 sabres for the officers (of the officers' pattern), 50 sabres of the dragoon pattern, and 20 revolvers for the officers, with holsters and belts. Countersigned by Division Commander Ivanov, Military Commissar K. Samtsov and Asst. Chief of Staff Yakovlev. Trotsky was second in command after Lenin; he managed the founding of the Red Army. After Lenin died in 1924 and Stalin took over, Trotsky was exiled; in 1937 he found refuge in Mexico but was assassinated by the long arm of Stalin in 1940.
