Smuts, Jan Christian (1870-1950) South African statesman and soldier; twice prime minister of South Africa (1919-24 and 1939-48). He was the only person to sign the peace treaties ending both world wars. Photograph Signed as Prime Minister, n.p., n.d., 8 x 5¾ inches. The photo has a London photographer's stamp on the verso; it is probably war date. Smuts worked closely with Winston Churchill during World War II and attained the rank of Field Marshall. Light scratch marks, else very good.
