Lot 650

Pin - Antique Diamond Crescent. Circa 18th century crescent pin consisting of 7 larger diamonds: rose-cut and European-cut white/clean 1 ct., two ½ ct., two 1/3 ct., 2 1/10 ct., and approximately 115 smaller mine-cut and rose-cut diamonds covering the entire surface. Total weight 15.2 gm

When the Turks were defeated by the Austrians in the early 1700's, first the Austrians and later the French, celebrated by creating a pastry sensation in the shape of the Turkish symbol, the crescent. Along with the "croissant" pastry, jewelry was created evoking praise for the military prowess of the European army over the Turkish invaders. This may have nothing at all to do with the crescent design of this heavily diamond studded piece, but then again it was created in the correct time frame.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
