Lot 2294

1905 $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. The production of proof gold in the half eagle series was its heaviest from 1900 to 1905, a combined mintage for those years of 930 proofs. For the 1905 issue, only 108 were minted and over the years many have been lost or impaired. The present gem has sharp contrast between mirrored fields and semi-frosted devices on both obverse and reverse. The radiating luster is accented by sparkling metal flow lines. A few random hairline scratches in the right field are the only marks. A diagnostic for the issue, the top of the 5 in the date has been recut, visible with 6x magnification. An important offering of the Finest Known cameo example graded by PCGS! PCGS population of 1 in PR-65CAM with none finer (PCGS # 88500) .
Estimated Value $22,000 - 28,000.

Realized $25,300
