Lot 2165

1886 $2.50 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. A beautiful, condition census gem quarter eagle from an era defined by small mintages. Between 1880-1886, not a single year had a recorded mintage over 5,000 coins and the 1886 quarter eagle had only 4,000 struck. The gem at hand hast soft, satiny surfaces that are rose gold in coloration. Lovely blue and golden hues are seen on the obverse, hidden near the peripheries. The reverse explodes with electric yellow, blue and mint green toning. A patch of iridescent and opaque toning/film is seen above the eagle's head and appears original. Luster engulfs the complete surfaces of both sides. The only mark to mention is a small planchet flaw to the right of star 4. A extremely scarce issue in gem and one that should be applauded for its originality and beauty! Only 22 gem quarter eagles from 1880-1886 have ever been graded by PCGS. For the 1886, PCGS has graded 2 in MS-65 with a single MS-67 finest (PCGS # 7838) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.
