Lot 2137

1860-S $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Only five Type III gold dollars were produced at the San Francisco Mint with a combined mintage of 51,000. The 1860-S in near-gem condition being offered here is a Condition Census example and the only San Francisco gold dollar from the 1860's. The surfaces are satiny and showcase soft rose-gold coloration with hints of light blue. A beautiful patch of steel-blue and teal green toning is present on the central reverse. Liberty's device is sharply impressed and shows no scratches. Aside from a very minute wipe in the fields, this coin is in gem condition and we feel that careful inspection should be given to this piece.

A strong case could be made that the San Francisco Type III gold dollars are undervalued in near-gem and gem condition. PCGS has graded only 12 MS64 specimens for all issues with 7 alone for the 1870-S. In MS65, only 5 specimens have been graded by PCGS and 4 of these are the 1870-S. Based on these numbers it seems that these issues are conditionally undervalued and a strong buying opportunity. One thing is certain, that the 1860-S offered here is one of the finest in existence and worthy of serious bidding. PCGS population of 2 in MS64 with a single MS65 as the finest (PCGS # 7557) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $10,350
