Lot 2135

1855-O $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-62. A gorgeous satiny example with rich gold coloration accented by steel and olive undertones. Well struck and exhibiting full headdress, wreath and bow detail. Minute hairlines in the fields do not distract from the original and frosty appearance of this scarce one-year "type" coin. The eight in the date is the only area displaying weakness, a characteristic of this issue even on the few mint state examples that exist. A very shallow scratch, almost like a luster break, connects the last hair curl to the border below. The New Orleans Mint produced Type II gold dollars only in 1855, at the tune of 55,000. Examples are almost always encountered with central strike weakness. Uncirculated examples above MS61 that are correctly graded and fully struck are very rare and desirable. The present specimen's originality and choice appearance should help it realize healthy bidding from all gold enthusiasts. Population of 10 in MS-62, 9 in MS-63 and 5 in MS-64 as finest.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

Realized $15,525
