Important Gem 1837 Reeded Edge Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. A striking gem example of this popular two year type issue. The production of reeded edge half dollars began in 1836 when the steam coining press was introduced at the Philadelphia Mint. While only 1,200 coins were produced in 1836, production increased dramatically in 1837 with approximately 3.6 million coins being produced. The significance of this issue as a two year type coin derives from the reeded edge and the denomination on the reverse denoted by "50c". Starting in 1838, the denomination was denoted as "Half Dol." Golden and gun metal blue toning grace this lustrous gem. A few trivial marks on the chin are easily located with a 3x loupe. The reverse has the die crack seen around the left rim and into the denomination. NGC population of 34 in MS-65, 12 in MS-66 and 1 in MS-66 "Star".
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Realized $6,900
