Lot 1118

Fantastically Toned 1878 Superb Gem Twenty Cent Piece. PCGS graded Proof 66. A beautifully toned superb gem with strongly iridescent surfaces and deeply mirrored fields. Only a faint hairline scratch can be noted in the field under the 8th star. A Condition Census example from a series with only a brief period of production. Business strike twenty cent pieces were produced from only 1875 to 1876 at the Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco Mints. Proof strikings had a longer run, from 1875-1878, with a combined proof mintage of 5,000. The 1878 has the third lowest mintage, only 600 pieces, and this specimen is unquestionably one of the finest to exist. PCGS population of 12 with none finer. The holder is scratched.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Realized $13,225
