Garbo, Greta (1905-90) American actress; known for her hauntingly beautiful face and aloofness. The November 8, 1937 issue of LIFE, with Garbo on the cover, Signed "Greta Garbo / Sept. 2, 1984 N.Y.C." Garbo retired from films after "Two Faced Woman" in 1941, but she could often be seen strolling around the West Side of New York City. This rare autograph was obtained by actor-writer Richard Tate when he encountered the "Swedish Sphinx" in Central Park. He had approached her other times, to no avail, but for some reason, she agreed to sign this magazine, which Tate carried with him that day. The magazine is intact and in fine condition. It contains photos and a story about Garbo, plus a feature about her latest film at the time, "Conquest" with Charles Boyer.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
