Chase, Salmon P (1808-73) U.S. senator, governor of Ohio; U.S. secretary of the treasury; Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Autograph Letter Signed ("S.P. Chase"), Columbus (Ohio), Dec. 17, 1860, 2 pp, octavo. To Michigan congressman J.P. Williams, answering some questions about Ohio's system of agriculture and about the state of the Union. In part, "Secession before Concession but nary bit of either is my motto. / Fairness & conciliation will win with God's blessing. His blessing…will not follow our new compromise with wrong…." As U.S. secretary of the treasury (1861-64), Chase originated a national banking system and issued the first "greenbacks" (1863). Fine condition.
