Roosevelt, Eleanor (1884-1962) Wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the U.S.; diplomat and author in her own right. Typed Letter Signed, New York, March 1, 1951, one page, octavo. To Anana McGowan, a longtime friend of the Roosevelts, and their caretaker in New Brunswick, Canada. In part: "The reason Mr. Elliott has not had anthing done to repair the house is because the estimate given him to do what is necessary was $51,000. That we can not do….Mr. Elliott will plan to come up himself to find out if there is any way in which we can keep a small portion of the house….Otherwise we will offer the whole property to the Canadian government….I should feel very badly if we do give it up, but I imagine I could rent a house on the Island for a few weeks if I wanted to come up…." Original transmittal envelope bears Mrs. Roosevelt's printed franking signature. At the time of this letter, Mrs. Roosevelt was chair of the United Nation's Commission on Human Rights. She was part of the first American delegation appointed by Harry Truman to the UN, representing the United States from December 31, 1945 until December 31, 1952.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
