Lot 574

1855 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 64. One of an estimated 30 Proofs struck of this date, one of only 5 Proofs graded by PCGS, bested only by a single Proof-65. Housed in an older-generation, green-label PCGS holder, believed to be from a time when grading was a little more strictly applied. Milky white, with three spots of color: one by the fifth obverse star, another just to the right of an below the Liberty cap, and a third one on the reverse just above the stem on the right side of the coin. Extremely rare.

The arrowheads on either side of the date signified a reduction in the weight of the coin from the previous, heavier standard. The arrowheads made it easier for the Mint and the public to tell the two weights apart, the ultimate goal being to replace the older coins with newer ones. In modern times, a similar situation occurred in 1965, when cupro-nickel clad coins replaced the old silver ones. For many years, even today, coin collectors and dealers make a tidy profit by pulling silver coins from circulation and selling them for a profit.

Only the Philadelphia Mint produced Dimes in 1855 (PCGS # 4744) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.
