Lot 39

1836 Classic Head Half Cent. First Restrike (Reverse of 1836). NGC graded Proof 66 Brown. One of the rarest and most popular dates in entire Half Cent series, primarily because it is a Proof-only date with an extremely limited number of Originals and Restrikes. This example is brick-red and brown, with attractive "pull-away" toning around most of the obverse devices. The reverse is more olive-brown in color and more uniform in appearance. The striking pressures were immense -- every detail is crisply struck up and because the dies were slightly off-center, a high wire rim arose on the left side of the obverse and the top left of the reverse. Often, these were filed down at the Mint but, thankfully, these were left intact. This example does not show the buckling of the obverse die that is diagnostic of the First Restrike, but the knife rims give it away. NGC reports 2 in this grade, with none finer.

Breen calls this a Rarity 7 and lists nine different examples -- unfortunately, we don't have the prior pedigree for this piece.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.
