Bar Kochba Revolt, AD 132-135. AE Medium Bronze (19.5mm; 6.35g) dated year One (AD 132/3), of the "irregular coinage." . Hen-680a. Imitative upright palm branch within laurel wreath. Reverse: Imitative chelys-lyre. Mesh 172A (these dies). H-680a. Mild 161 [only two examples cited]. Very rare. Harshly cleaned. Very Good.
Estimated Value $350 - 450.
While there is some difference of opinion regarding the irregular coinage, most agree that the coins were produced in a hurried fashion, likely at a moving military mint. There is a great variance between these and the regularly produced coins in the style, epigraphy and manner of striking (including die axis). The barbaric imitative style could indicate that they were minted later in the war than their inscribed date suggests.
