Lot 3178

France, Henry IV (1589-1610). Silver Quarter Ecu dated 1590, minted at Compiègne by Simon de Navarre. Lafaurie 1074; Ciani 1515 (valued at 40 francs, four times the normal type). Crowned arms; at six o'clock, mintmark "A" for Compiègne followed by Hebrew letter shin for moneyer Simon de Navarre. Reverse: Cross formed of lilies. Very light scratch in upper left quadrant of reverse field; lovely multicolor toning at peripheries. Choice Very Fine.

Compiègne is an important city on the Oise river north and a bit east of Paris. Situated midway between Rouen and Reims, it has a Gothic town hall, a noted chateau, and is perhaps best remembered as the nearest town to the forested area at which the armistice ending World War I was signed, 11 Nov. 1918. After this issue, the main mint of France at Paris claimed the letter "A" for its mintmark.
Estimated Value $450 - 650.

Realized $1,380
