Sale 25

Lot 3175

France, Merovingian Period. Gold Tremissis (1.29g) minted c. AD 570-670 at Mâcon by the moneyer Jusef. Radiate and draped bust right. Reverse: Cross on globe (globus cruciger) with star underneath; in field, mintmark "MA"; around, name of minter. JMM p. 8 (the reverse of this coin is illustrated). Very rare. Numerous die breaks, Very Fine.

All Merovingian gold coins are rare. The types and artistry are diverse, as are the different locales of the mints. This particular coin's obverse is imitative of AD 4th-5th century Roman bronzes, while the reverse is reminiscent of tremisses of late 6th century Byzantium. The idea of inscribing the mintplace as well as the moneyer's name on the reverse was continued in France and for even longer in England, until the "New Coinage" of Edward I (introduced in 1279), which omitted the moneyer's name.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,750.

Realized $1,380
