Lot 3030

4th century BC. AR Obol (0.54g). Crowned and bearded head right of Persian king. Reverse: Lion seated left with raised right paw; in upper right field, name of Samaritan governor (Sanballat). Meshorer and Qedar (The Coinage of Samaria in the Fourth Century BCE) 42. Very Fine / Extremely Fine.

One of the great fascinations of numismatics is that, while coins seem to stand alone in their trays, they bespeak connections which are shared with so many other studies. The masterfully executed Akkadian cylinder seals first mention the name Sanballat (a possible ancestor of this governor) in association with the moon cult and the derivation of his name can be translated "moon god gave life (to him)."
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

Realized $805
