Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 25

Lot 2563

1874 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A notable rarity in the Proof eagle series, and the only Cameo Proof (in any grade) yet certified by PCGS. With an original mintage of only 20 pieces, one cannot hope to find a nicer or a prettier coin. The number of survivors is estimated to be around 10 pieces. This coin is easily identifiable by a spot of color on the obverse rim at 6:30 and a tinier spot just below Liberty's earlobe. It does not match the Trompeter or the Bass coin (which appeared twice); this one may be ex-Garrett. From 1997 to 2001, only four Proof 1874 Eagles appeared at auction, ranging in grade from Proof-60 to Proof-64. Thus, the opportunity to purchase a gem of this quality is almost rarer than the coin itself!
Estimated Value $75,000 - 80,000.
