Sale 25

Lot 2434

1881 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58 Prooflike. Pale-yellow in color, with lightly abraded fields and bright, prooflike luster in the protected areas. The strike is very strong, giving the appearance of a circulated Proof, but this is clearly a business strike and probably one of the first coins from the dies after the Proofs were struck. The 1881 Quarter Eagle is one of the "keys" of the series and it's mintage of only 640 coins is only slightly greater than the much more widely recognized (hence, expensive) 1875! NGC reports 2 in this grade, 1 in MS-60 PL and 8 in MS-61 PL.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Realized $5,175
