Lot 2399

1804 $2.50 Capped Bust. 14 stars on reverse. NGC graded AU-50. A nice and attractive example of this classic American gold coin. Slightly dullish luster on the obverse, with a pleasing orange-gold color. The reverse is brighter, with lots of luster and scattered traces of coppery toning over green-gold surfaces. Nicely struck and problem-free, virtually devoid of any adjustment marks. Mintage of only 2,324 pieces. This 14-star reverse was also used to strike 1804 dimes! The placement of the stars on the reverse also indicates that this may have been a die left over from 1798 (from 1802 on, the stars appear in three arcs above the eagle). The 14 stars reverse is decidedly more "common" than the 13 stars reverse, but both are rare, and this represents an excellent opportunity to puirchase a nice, high grade example.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

Realized $12,650
