Lot 1072

1837 Feuchtwanger Cent. PCGS graded MS-65. The finest example of this variety yet seen by your cataloguer! The strike is superb for the type, even down to the fine details of the feathers on the eagle (something that is rarely seen). The surfaces are lustrous, lightly toned, and absolutely original and choice. Feuchtwanger produced One and Three Cent pieces to show the benefits of his eponymous "composition" at a time when the U.S. Mint was concerned with the high costs of producing Large Cents. Unfortunately for the good doctor, he was just a few years too early -- it wasn't until 1856 that the Mint switched to a similar Copper-Nickel alloy for the new Small Cents.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Realized $1,150
