Holbein, Hans. Christina, Duchess of Milan. A rare, handpainted mezzotint portrait of Christina, Duchess of Milan, who waas one of the eligible ladies of royalty presented to Henry VIII for possible marriage after the execution of one of his wives. Holbein, who was Henry VIII's court painter, was sent to Europe to do portraits of possible candidates. Presented here is an engraved mezzotint after Holbein by well-known engraver Charles Bird, limited to 250 copies and published in 1909. A holograph statement in pencil by Bird in the lower border says, "Engraved & painted in colour at one printing without retouching. Charles Bird." The portrait, in original black wood frame, is 12½ x 6½ in; the frame is 15 1/8 x 9¼ in. Printed label on the back states the artist's name, the process, and the limit of the edition to 250 copies. A very fine English Tudor memento.
