(Charles I - English Civil War). 1647 English Civil War pamphlet: An Answer To A Letter Written at Oxford And superscribed to Dr. Samuel Turner, Concerning the Church, and the Revenues thereof. Wherein is shewed, how impossible it is for the King with a good conscience to yeeld to the change of Church-Government by Bishops, or tothe alienating the Lands of the Church. 7 x 5½ in., 53 pp. Owner's signature "W. Stonehouse" on front cover. Light bend crease of upper right corner pages and back page with lower right corner crease. Some soiling to front page and a couple of small paper holes and flaws. Internal moderate toning; otherwise, bright and readable. On May 5, 1646, Charles I was captured by Scottish forces, who wanted him to agree to the introduction of Presbyterian government in the Church of England. Charles tried to play off the Scots against the English and the various English factions against one another. This pamphlet is an example of the explosion of opinions that were voiced at that time.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
