16th Century Elizabethan Deed. A rare Elizabethan vellum indenture (1568), 10½ x 10 inches, written entirely in Latin and mentioning adjacent land belonging to the family of Queen Elizabeth I's future favorite, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, who would be executed for treason in 1601. The beautiful vellum deed concerns a gentleman, "John Baron in the region of the viscountcy of Essex," who has joint ownership with John Dallyn "of a certain the viscountcy of Leden in the same region" and who is transferring three "drafta" of land (ten acres) to Dallyn, "Standing between the crop area garden there named Yadmall Irene to the East and a certain acreage presently belonging to a Bridget, to the West…." The last paragraph states, "…Given on the nineteenth day of September in the tenth year of the reign of Our Queen Elizabeth…." Signed and sealed by John Baron in the presence of Edward Lymit and Thomas Lygania. A beautiful calligraphic manuscript, written in dark brown ink and accompanied by a complete English translation. The red seal and vellum ribbon are complete and untorn and the document is archivally mounted in a shadow box frame to an overall size of 20½ x 17¾ inches.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
