Morse, Samuel F.B (1791-1872) Inventor of the telegraph; artist. Autograph Letter Signed ("Saml. F.B. Morse") (New York), Dec. 28, 1871, 1 page, octavo. To William H. Hallock, sending regrets that he cannot attend a Southern Aid Society meeting and naming Hallock his proxy. In part: "…I shall not be able to attend, but I hereby constitute you my proxy to vote at the meeting for me, in the hope…it will answer the purpose of my personal presence…." Written a little over three months before Morse's death and six months after a statue of him was unveiled in Central Park. The recipient may actually have been William A. Hallock, for many years the moving force behind the American Tract Society. Mounting traces in corners on verso, else Fine.
