Steinway Trophy, 1916. Nineteen-inch sterling silver trophy of graceful design engraved, "To Charles H. Steinway / as a token of affection and esteem / from / The Steinway Dealers / New York / June 22, 1916." Bottom of base is engraved "Black Starr & Frost Sterling / 2054 / 19 In." The handles of the Art Nouveau-style vase extend 2¼ inches above the lip of the vase. A little polish and the vase will be like new. Charles Steinway was one of four sons of Henry Engelhard Steinway, a German immigrant who founded Steinway & Sons in 1853 in a loft on Manhattan's Varick Street. Over the next forty years, Henry and his sons developed the modern piano. In 1867, the company was awarded the prestigious "Grand Gold Medal of Honor" at the Paris Exhibition, the first time an American company had received this award. Steinway became a standard of excellence, and today, Steinway & Sons crafts approximately 5,000 pianos a year worldwide. Weight is 4 pounds, 8½ ounces.
