Lot 279

1892 Barber Dime. NGC graded MS-61. A remarkable coin, quite possibly the only double-struck Barber Dime known. Here's what the late David Lawrence (Barber coinage specialist and a previous owner of the coin) had to say in the Spring 1992 issue of the Journal of the Barber Coin Collectors's Society: "This dime was offered to us at the recent Long Beach convention and, of course, we had to buy it! Off-center Barber dimes are seen occasionally, but this is the first double-struck one I can recall. Technically, it is an 'off-center second strike over a first strike.' The first two digits appear to be '19' and the coins might well be a 1900-S. Truly an 'S over (literally) S' with the first S high at 12:00 o'clock and the second in its normal position. I learned long ago that I could not be a collector and a dealer at the same time, so I have sold every nice Barber I have ever owned -- until now! This is the only coin in my collection."

Now, this wonderful rarity is being made available to our bidding audience for the first time.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
