Lot 1637

Kushano-Sasanians. "Vahahran" (Kidara?), after 350 AD. Gold Stater (7.7 g). King standing left, flames at shoulders, wearing filleted crown, holding trident, and sacrificing at altar. Reverse: Shiva standing facing, holding trident, bull behind. Cribb 9; Gobl Kushan 1718; Mitch. ACW 1301. Obverse well struck up, the reverse better than typical. Also interesting for the Pahlevi graffiti along obverse edge: "dsr 'ty(?)." Coin essentially as struck. Choice Very Fine.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
Ex: The last Kushano-Sasanian king to rule the area (c. 325-350 AD.) was named Vahahran. The area then passed into personal control of the Sasanian king, Shapur II. Even with his reign ended, others afterwards struck coins using his name, particularly the "Kidarites" (probably of Iranian extraction, but it is uncertain whether these peoples were Sasanian, Kushan, or Hun).
