Lot 1250

St. Louis, Louisiana Purchase Exposition, 1904. Large and Attractive Gilt Bronze Medal. Medal a rounded, triangular shield, with wreathed initials and fleur-de-lys in the respective corners, with shield enclosing circular, central design. Obverse has finely modeled design of soberly clad Liberty, sheltering under the American flag the semidraped maiden, Louisiana. Reverse with splendid American eagle, wings spread, standing on rectangular frieze, with twin flanking dolphins below, with legend: "Commemorative Medal, Louisiana Purchase Exposition." In original morocco-like cardboard box, burgundy-colored, with velvet liner and satin lid. But for two fly speck defects in the gilding, medal perfect, and as struck. Box missing part of rim on lid. Medal width: 2-3/4".
