Haviland China. Place settings for twelve, with multiple serving pieces including salt and pepper shakers, a large platter, several vegetable dishes, a butter server and other items. The set is Haviland Limoges (although a few of the salt and pepper shakers are from other manufacturers) and handpainted, with many of the pieces dated 1917 and signed by the artist. The breadth of the collection and the unique quality of the painting lead us to believe this was a set done as a gift, probably for a wedding or anniversary, by someone who knew the recipients.
Delicate roses are strewn across a blue-green washed background and gilt accents, particularly on the handles and flourishes of ribbon motif, lend a quality of richness to the set. Obviously treasured by the owners, this china was used only on special occasions, as is evidenced by the very light wear the pieces show. A bit of the gold paint has worn away in a few spots, and there are a mere handful of chips or repairs scattered throughout the entire group, making this a uniquely intact and presentable (and very usable) set of dishes. An instant heirloom, this reminder of gentler times is surely a prize to be won.
