1798/97 Draped Bust Dime. 16 stars. . R-1. NGC graded MS-66. Certainly one of the very finest known of the variety, with only 3 so graded by NGC, and none graded higher. Similar at PCGS, which has only graded 1 coin as high as MS-65, and none higher! This one has frosty luster on both sides, and is virtually untoned. Struck from clashed dies which show faint clash marks on the obverse, and the obverse has been lapped, weakening the lower details. The upper curls on Liberty and a few of the obverse stars are not fully struck, but all show definition, similar on the reverse, where the shield has weakness at the center, as always for this variety. A superb coin which is one of the finest graded.
