Lot 376

1855 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 65. One of the top dozen of this rare date. NGC has graded 4 this high, with 5 graded higher. Silvery white and untoned, with excellent surfaces that show no signs of problems or handling issues. Boldly struck, but a couple of stars don't have full centers. There are light hairlines in the fields, but they are not too distracting. Deep watery mirrors surrounded by the contrasting frosty devices. An important offering, and eagerly sought by collectors since one was auctioned in 1958 for over $1,000 (S.J. Kabealo's Pittsburgh Sale, 11/14/58:1018 at $1,050), a record which held until 1966, and prices have been moving higher in fits and starts ever since. A splendid coin for the advanced numismatist.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $9,315
