Lot 145

1796 Draped Bust Cent. . S-119. NGC graded MS-61 Brown. This is a hoard coin thanks to a Sen. Benjamin Goodhue who purchased 1000 of these for his daughters, most of the coins were dated 1796 or 1797, and these were preserved through their descendants until 1863 when they were purchased by David Nichols of Gallows Hill, Massachusetts and started entering numismatic channels at that time. Further, the coins from this hoard often had the best planchets, which were prepared by Boulton & Watt in England and shipped to Philadelphia for coining. This particular example has choice medium brown color with a few trivial handling ticks, mostly on the devices. There is a small planchet defect above the RI of AMERICA near the rim, and that will serve to hallmark this particular example. One of the earliest hoards of Federal coinage yet found, and one of the few dates that collectors can hope to obtain in mint state because of this old hoard.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Realized $4,600
