Sicily, Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. Silver Tetradrachm (17.22 g), 485-466 BC. Under Hieron I, ca. 475-470 BC. Charioteer, holding reigns and kentron, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right crowning horses with wreath. Reverse: ΣV-RAKO-ΣIO-N (N retrograde), diademed head of Arethusa right, wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins clockwise. Boehringer series VIiia, 107 (V49/R73); Randazzo grp. 3, 463-4 (same obv. die); SNG ANS -. Toned and well-centered. NGC grade Choice Very Fine; Strike: 4/5, Surface: 4/5.
