Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (Canterbury mint, struck c. 843-848). North-610; S-1047. 1.45 grams. Aethelwulf, 839-858 AD. Phase II coinage. Diademed and draped bust of pleasing style right; + EÐELVVLF REX. Reverse: Central circle, cross crosslet within; + LIABA MONETA around. Finely centered, good strike on a choice, full flan. Metal very good, with only a few tiny spots of verdigris. Even, silvery to medium warm brownish gray toning. Very Rare, particularly in this grade. NGC graded MS-61.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
Ex Reynolds (40) and Lockett (469) collections. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). A remarkable and famous specimen -- one of the finest known examples of this rarity.
