Lot 206

Great Britain (?) - Hiberno-Norse Viking Coinage. AR Penny, ND. North --; S --. Cnut-style penny. 0.73 grams. Anlaf V, c. 1029-1034 AD. Helmeted and draped bust left, holding scepter: + ANLF + CVI? E around. Reverse: Central circle, cross intermediate to voided and jeweled types within; + ODA T? DNLNVF around. Sharp, full strike, on outstanding lustrous metal. Light smokey to golden-gray toning. NGC graded MS-61.

One of the greatest rarities of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking coinages. Probably struck at Dublin. Not listed in either North or Spink, this Anlaf is that rare. He was killed, as an invader, on his way to Rome. This coin, closely similar to Cnut's pointed-helmet type, is the only known specimen in Anlaf's name. Similar coins in Roth, BNJ, volume. 6 (1909), p. 55, which even then cited their great rarity. No other coins are known of this king!.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).

Realized $36,800
