Great Britain. Kings of Mercia. AR Penny, ND. North-429; S-944. 1.36 grams. Ceolwulf II, 874-879/80 AD. Cross-Lozenge type. Diademed and draped bust right; CIOLWL F REX, three pellets ending. Reverse: Cross crosslet with lozenge-shaped center, plain small cross within; LIOFVALD MONET in the quarterd angles. Bold, full strike on excellent metal, with superior portrait. Artistic, medium to deep gray toning; lightly polished or cleaned long ago. Overstruck on earlier penny; F REX to be clearly seen on the reverse at 9 o'clock. A coin of great charm. Extremely Rare! NGC graded EF-40.

A stunning example of the short-reigned and last king of Mercia, who was killed in the period of Viking raids. Said to be the finest known coin of this ruler.
