Lot 3141

1883 Hawaiian Ten Cents. PCGS graded MS-63. Delicately toned on both sides. In an old green label PCGS holder. The Hawaiian motto UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO loosely translates as "The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness." This harkens back to the 1830s before American influence became predominant, when an adventuresome British sea captain seized the islands over a property dispute and then ran the government as a fiefdom for six months. Queen Victoria found out about it and relinquished control back to the proper authorities (King Kamehameha III). The King made known his appreciation by means of this motto, which later became the State's motto upon Hawaii's admission to the Union in 1959. Hawaiian dimes in Mint condition are scarce. Many were melted after 1900. Pop 27; 52 finer (PCGS # 10979) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
