Kai-shek, Madame Chiang (1897-2003) Powerful wife of the president of Nationalist China; the second woman and first Chinese to address the U.S. Congress (1943). Typed Letter Signed "Mayling Soong Chiang" on stationery headed "Office of the President / China," Taipei, Taiwan, March 24, 1955, 1p, quarto. To former U.S. Postmaster General James A. Farley, consoling him on the death of Mrs. Farley. In part: "…The separation through death…is only temporary….I hope…that you will take comfort in knowing that she is free from suffering and that her spirit is never far from you…." An extremely rare letter with unusual content. Madam Chiang graduated from Wellesley College; her linguistic skills and political acumen were important to the promulgation of the Chinese Nationalist cause. Show through from glue remnants on verso, affecting "Chiang" in the signature.
