Lot 1076

(Washington, George) The Newport Herald, Newport, May 7, 1789. 4 pp., 17 x 10½ in. Over 2½ columns on pages 1 and 2 narrate the first inauguration of George Washington on April 30, 1789, in New York City. The oath of office was administered on the balcony of the Senate chamber at Federal Hall by R.R. Livingston, Chancellor of the State of New York. The new President then retired to the Senate Chamber and gave a speech, the entire text of which is printed, before a joint session of the two Houses of Congress. A religious service at the Episcopal Church followed. Various celebrations, including fireworks, followed in the evening. Page 2 also holds the address of the citizens of Alexandria, Virginia, to Washington on April 16th, and his reply, as well as a description of the honors accorded Washington at Trenton, New Jersey. Page 1 gives information on the 11 states of the Union; Rhode Island and North Carolina are referred to as "Foreign States" because they did not become states until May 29, 1790 and November 21, 1789 respectively. Housed in a custom-made holder of black buckram with burgundy spine; the name of the paper, the date, and "Inauguration of George Washington" are in gilt lettering.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.
