(Lincoln, Abraham) Dispatch Announcing His Assassination. Military dispatch announcing the death of President Abraham Lincoln, from "Headquarters 1st Div. 17th A.C., Raleigh N.C., April 17, 1865," 1p. quarto. In full: "The following despatch has been received by Maj. Genl. Blair. 'General' Our noble President has been assassinated and is dead. Seward also, and his son: it is thought Seward will live but his son cannot. The assassins are said to have attempted Grant but failed. They are reported on the track of Sherman, and the Secretary puts him on his Guard. My heart is filled with gloom and sorrow. We have lost our noble head. (signed) O.O. Howard, Maj. Genl. By order of Brig Genl M.F. Force.…" Signed by "James R. Adams, Capt. & a.a.a.h." Docketed on verso. Binding remnants at left edge, else fine.
