Lot 98

1845 N-6 R2 MS63+. Lustrous light steel brown with overtones of bluish steel and 5% of the mint red remaining on the obverse, 50% on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only defects are a pair of small, dull nicks under the N in CENT. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state c. There are very faint die cracks through stars 1-7 and a light crack from the stem tip to the base of the adjacent A. The die clashmarks are clear on both sides. A choice, very sharp cent showing full radial lines in all the stars. Very close to MS64. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS65BN (NGC label included). DWH #2036.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions 8/17/96:448-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:205.
