Lot 858

1799 S-189 R2 VG10. Sharpness VF25 or so where the details were struck properly, but the dies were not axially aligned (the die faces were not parallel) causing the date, bust tip, and opposing legend at TES OF to be faint or missing altogether. Breen discusses this phenomenon on pages 543 and 544 of his large cent encyclopedia where he explains how this misalignment during his die state IV caused the die crack of his die state V. The surfaces of this cent are covered with uniform very fine roughness under a rather glossy dark olive and steel patina. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few faint hairline scratches in the area where the date should have been. Breen state IV. The lump under E in ONE is strong. Called VF20 net VG8 in the Noyes census, his photo #25397.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Robert Westfall 6/81-John D. Wright.
