Lot 697

1851 N-35 R5+. NGC graded AU-55. Glossy chocolate brown. The surfaces are mostly smooth and attractive, but there are a few marks. These include a small spot of greenish verdigris under star 12, some fine carbon on the leaves under OF, and a small dig under the E in CENT. EDS, die state a. There are no visible rim cud breaks on the reverse, although they may have been present and worn off in circulation, and the die lines and points are sharp. This is the discovery coin for the die variety according to Jules Reiver, who first reported the discovery. Our grade is net VF25+, tied for CC#11 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Reiver provenance are noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex George Ramont 6/17/71-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/06:20497 (via Don Valenziano)-Phyllis Thompson.
