Lot 667

1795 C-5b R4 Plain Edge without Pole, Thick Planchet VF25. Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and brown with a hint of sea-green toning at the date. The surfaces are smooth and attractive. The only marks are three small abrasions on the obverse rim, and these are spaced in a way that suggests the marks are from tiny tacks used to hold this piece against a display board. One mark is in the dentils above the R in LIBERTY, another is in the dentils off the bust tip, and the third is in the dentils left of the lowest curls. In spite of these minor defects, this piece is at the lower end of the condition census for the thick planchet sub-variety. (The thick planchet version was struck on planchets cut down from large cent planchets, either ones that were spoiled by mint error strikes or planchets that went unused for some reason.) No trace of large cent undertype is visible on this piece. Weight 115.2 grains (versus the normal thin planchet weight standard of 84.0 grains).
Estimated Value $3,500-UP.
Ex Jon Hanson-Doug Bird.
