Lot 550

1850 N-24 R4+ VF20. Sharpness EF40 but cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and chocolate brown. No verdigris or notable signs of contact, but there are shallow voids above stars 6-9 and similar but deeper voids between much of the reverse legend and the dentils. These voids were caused by planchet slag, and traces of the dark reddish impurity remain in several of the voids on the reverse. Similar slag-caused voids have been found on several varieties of 1849 large cents as well, but this is the first reported for an 1850. A very odd type of mint error that just happens to be on a tough die variety.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Realized $150
